About the event
"The goal of life is living in agreement with nature."
- Zeno of Citium
Whether a novice, journeyman or expert, if you can get the fundamentals right everything else will fall into place.
This March we’re taking everything back to basics & focusing on Dave Canterbury’s 5 C’s;
Cutting tools, combustion, cover, containers & cordage.
Spend a morning close to the Spring Equinox emersed in the trees, surrounded by birdsong & the emerging signs of new life in the woodlands while we practice a variety of traditional woodland skills.
We will start by learning how to choose and use the appropriate cutting tools, from knives to saws, to create useful items from natural materials. Then, we will move on to mastering the art of fire-making using a variety of techniques, including the use of a ferro rod.
Next, we will explore different types of natural cover, such as debris shelters & tarps, learning how to construct them to protect ourselves from the elements. We will also delve into the world of containers & how to choose the appropriate vessel for a given task.
Finally, we will tackle some essential knots & hitches to help you in most situations.
Cutting tools:
Practice your skills using numerous cutting tools to create your own functional items to be used across the morning
Combustion:
Here we will look at ancient & modern methods of creating fire using all natural tinder materials
Cover:
Set up your own tarp shelters beside a fire, creating a personal basecamp for the event
Containers:
We will look at a variety of containers to be carried into the woodlands & their purposes before using one to create our own char materials, making your future fire making significantly easier
Cordage:
Here we will look at a few essential knots that can be applied in countless situations. Once you have these in your tool box you’ll be virtually unstoppable
By the end of the morning, you will have a solid grounding in the fundamental skills needed to thrive in the great outdoors, & a deeper appreciation for the beauty & abundance of nature.
